Modernizing a historic research library for 21st-century scholarship
The Dumbarton Oaks Library renovation represented a unique challenge: modernizing one of the world's premier research libraries in Byzantine, Pre-Columbian, and Garden & Landscape Architecture studies while preserving its historic character and ensuring the protection of irreplaceable collections.
This comprehensive 30-month project encompassed complete infrastructure upgrades, climate control systems essential for manuscript preservation, advanced security systems, accessibility improvements, and the integration of modern digital research facilities—all accomplished while the library maintained limited operations.
Working closely with curators, conservators, and rare book specialists, Landmark Logix developed and executed a phased approach that prioritized collection safety, minimized disruption to ongoing research, and delivered a state-of-the-art facility that honors the library's scholarly mission.
Months 1-6: Established temporary storage, conducted structural analysis, and developed detailed protection protocols for rare manuscripts and books.

Months 7-18: Upgraded mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems with focus on climate control critical for collection preservation.

Months 19-26: Restored historic reading rooms, installed advanced security systems, and integrated digital research infrastructure.

Months 27-30: Collection return, system testing, staff training, and phased reopening to research community.
